Mullaghmeen, Leinster Spring Cup No. 5

This Sunday, 18th April, see's the 5th and final event of the Leinster Spring Cup being held in Mullaghmeen. This is your last chance for some training before the Irish Orienteering Championships. It will be nice to run in Mullaghmeen in Spring instead of the usual Autumn events as hopefully there will more more wild flowers and less briars! The forecast also looks good for this weekend.

Details of the event can be found on our Mullaghmeen events page, including directions, Google maps, course length and climb and map scale. We are suggesting meeting at the Castlepollard Arms Hotel, Castlepollard afterwards for a quick drink, a chat and maybe something to eat.

Originally the land was part of Lord Buckinghamshire's Irish Estate. Later , Mullaghmeen became the property of Lord Gradwell of Dowth hall in County Meath and was run as a farm.  In the 1930's, the Department of Agriculture acquired Mullaghmeen forest and planted deciduous trees on the limestone rich soil. Mullahgmeen is now the largest beech plantation in Ireland and includes Sitka spruce, Scots pine and noble fir and a very interesting native tree collection within the 1,000 acres of forest. See here for more information and walks.
