Aoife 6th in World Wife Carrying Championships
World Wife Carrying Championships - Sonkajarvi, Finland. Report from Paul Keville.
Aoife Desmond from Setanta and John O'Shea took part in the World Wife Carrying Championships last weekend the 3rd of July. They came in a very respectable 6th place with a time of 1.13'6. The winning time came from Taisto Miettinen and Kristiina Haapanen who came from finland with a time of 1.04'9. Along with a lot of competitors who were there for fun there were a lot of strong competitive athletes. This made the competition both exciting and fun to watch and take part in. Despite John being injured the week approaching the event he had run an impressive race, although Aoife claims she has the harder job of holding on. A total of 52 competitors took part in the main race.
I had the oppertunity in taking part in the wife carrying sprint competitionh which was a 100 metre sprint with the water obstocale.I also competed in the relay event with 2 other irish men and ciara crosson from cork taking third place. The relay comprised of 3 legs the water jump the sprint and the hurdles. the wife had to be exchanged to each competitor and the runners had to down a bottle of fizzy water before the next runner could run. Team ireland in the relay event came third. The competitors in team ireland relay team were Paul Keville, James Kennedy, Ruaidhri Martin and we were carrying Ciara Crossan.
The Irish heats are are taking place on the 24th of July 2010 in Sneem, Co. Kerry. Check out www.sneemfestival.com/. I'm sure there are a few orienteers would be willing to take the plunge and attempt this competition. The winning prize is an expenses paid trip to Finland to compete in the World Championships 2011 (very tempting prize). Who will challenge John O'Shea's and Aoife Desmond's title?
